MIAGI Festival 2008 Presents Isak Roux
South African born Pianist, Composer and Arranger to visit SA Ahead of Festival
The annual Total MIAGI (Music is a Great Investment) Festival will be taking place in Cape Town and Johannesburg from May 3rd -20th 2008. MIAGI’s annual festival, which unites the power of Classical, Indigenous and Jazz, will see top local and international artists perform to extensive SA and international media coverage.
MIAGI introduces South African music to audiences worldwide, commissioning new works combining indigenous and traditional with classical styles, thus promoting our music heritage internationally.
MIAGI is proud to announce as part of this year’s festival the performance of a unique composition by Isak Roux. Durban born and Germany based Roux has had his many compositions ranging from small solo-piano pieces to big orchestral works, performed across the world, from Europe to Africa. The works are an exciting blend of European classical music influences together with jazz and South African music styles (the music that Roux came into contact with, and that shaped his musical development the most, during his childhood and adolescence in South Africa).
Roux has released a number of albums to international acclaim. Two of his major works in recent years were MIAGI commissioned, and brought him opportunities to collaborate with a host of artists including South Africa’s own Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the English Chamber Orchestra from London (ECO), and Ralf Gothóni (principal conductor of the ECO, who by the way also will be international star guest of the Total MIAGI Festival 2008!).
MIAGI is proud to present his Jazz-Gospel Cantata as part of the annual MIAGI Festival 2008.
Isak Roux will be in South Africa and available for interviews from March 18th – 19th and 26th-29th.

For the 2008 Festival, MIAGI has commissioned composer, arranger and pianist Isak Roux to compose a full jazz gospel cantata. In 'Coming Home' Roux brings the Spiritual back to its roots and arranges an exciting and unique musical encounter between this deeply moving Afro-American musical idiom and modern South African styles, such as township jazz and kwela.
MIAGI‘s collaboration with composer and pianist Isak Roux has resulted in a number of exciting and unusual compositions that have received great acclaim internationally. In 2006 his work for orchestra and four pennywhistles was presented in Bern, Switzerland, by Kwela Tebza and the Bern Symphony Orchestra, and his arrangements for Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra are featured on the MIAGI produced ‘No Boundaries’ CD, nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006.
